What Is Emotional Eating?

Emotional eating refers to a range of unhealthy eating patterns that may include restricting food, overeating, obsessing about weight or appearance, or feeling out of control around food. Unlike a diagnosed eating disorder, emotional eating can look subtle from the outside while still causing significant emotional, physical, and mental stress. Therapy helps individuals explore these patterns, reduce harmful behaviours, and rebuild a healthy relationship with food and their body.

Who Does Emotional Eating Affect?

Emotional eating can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or body type. It often appears in people dealing with stress, body image concerns, perfectionism, low self-esteem, trauma, or pressure from sports, work, school, or social expectations. It can also develop gradually from dieting, restrictive rules, or emotional coping strategies that become hard to break. Many individuals experiencing disordered eating feel shame, secrecy, or confusion, which makes supportive, non-judgmental therapy essential.
